The Ministry of Tourism and the General Department of Immigration are giving cards to foreign travellers with information to stay safe amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The information cards are being distributed at all international border gates and airports.

The cards contain the national emergency number (115) so that travellers can contact the Ministry of Health if they have questions about Covid-19 or if they wish to have a health checkup.

Ministry spokesman Top Sopheak said: “The purpose is to spread information about staying safe while in Cambodia. We also want tourists to remember that they must take precautions to avoid being infected by the virus.

“If you have a health problem during your stay in Cambodia, please contact a medical specialist for a checkup by calling the hotline 115,” he said.

The government ordered the closure of all public and private schools and several vocational training centres in Siem Reap town after a 38-year-old Cambodian man was confirmed Covid-19 positive on Saturday.

The Covid-19 positive man is only the second person to have the virus in Cambodia, after the first involving a Chinese traveller who visited Preah Sihanouk province.

Siem Reap provincial governor Tea Seiha on Monday held an emergency meeting to take measures against Covid-19 in the province.

He instructed officials to continue disseminating accurate information and combat the spread of misinformation about the virus. Siem Reap provincial authorities will take legal action against those who knowingly spread “fake news”, Seiha warned.

Provincial authorities are working with the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia and the private sector to eliminate the virus in Siem Reap town.
