A speeding Mercedes driver ploughed into the back of a bus at 3 am yesterday while it was parked for repairs on the side of National Road 5.

Police attributed the driver walking away unscathed to airbag technology, allowing him to leave his trashed vehicle behind to flee the scene.

Both car and bus were impounded by police.
