Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomes plans by a French wind power company to expand their operations into Cambodia. The new investment comes as the Kingdom looks to increase its clean energy generation, as part of efforts to combat climate change.

Manet took to social media to announce this following his meeting with Olivier Duguet, chairman and CEO of Blue Circle, in Paris on January 15.

During the meeting, Duguet briefed the prime minister on current investments by his company in Cambodia, as well as their expansion plans. 

Duguet explained that his company focuses on reviewable energy, specifically wind power. Through its partnership with a local company, Blue Circle has identified several locations in Cambodia which are perfect for the generation of wind power, such as on top of Bokor Mountain and certain other locations in the mountains of Mondulkiri province.

With the support of the stakeholders and the government, his firm is expected to produce up to 100 megawatts in the first phase of its operation, which will expand in the future.

“Through projects like this, Cambodia will soon be able to produce excess renewable energy, which it will be able to sell to other countries,” said Manet.

Manet supported the plans, suggesting that the company work closely with its partners and relevant state institutions to ensure its projects are completed.

Blue Circle began their Bokor project some years ago, and aims to produce up to 80MW. The system is expected to be connected to the national grid later this year.

Cambodia aims to reach at least 70 per cent clean energy production by 2030. By the end of 2022, over 62 per cent of the electricity used in the Kingdom was generated by clean sources.
