The general history of Cambodia, particularly in an economic and monetary context, is set to become more widely accessible following the inking of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the National Bank of Cambodia’s (NBC) Museum of Economy and Money (SOSORO), and the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC).

The signing ceremony, overseen by NBC governor Chea Serey, took place on March 20 at SOSORO, officially known as Preah Srey Icanavarman Museum, according to a joint press release.

ABC chairman Raymond Sia emphasised the importance of providing financial literacy to the public.

“We believe that education enhances knowledge, and this collaboration represents a direct investment in future financial stability, the soundness and resilience of the banking sector and the well-being of Cambodian citizens,” he stated.

SOSORO co-director Blaise Kilian stated that the cooperation would allow schools to arrange visits for thousands of students to the museum.

“I am grateful for ABC and its members’ dedication to promoting financial education and ultimately inclusive growth in Cambodia,” he said.

The press release outlined three main initiatives under the MoU: a pooled fund for educational visits, with the ABC calling on its members to support trips to the museum for public school students nationwide; bi-annual visits, with the association organising and funding two museum visits for public school students in 2024, offering a hands-on learning experience about Cambodia’s monetary history and financial principles; and promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the Cambodian banking sector, focusing on their role in enhancing financial literacy.

Serey stressed the importance of historical knowledge in the statement.

“Understanding general history, particularly economic and monetary history, is essential for new generations to comprehend the past and make informed decisions in the present that shape our future,” the central bank chief was quoted as saying.

“It is crucial that everyone in society, regardless of their socio-economic background, gets maximum exposure to education and culture, both in and outside of school,” she added.

The MoU is effective immediately and will remain in force until December 31, with the potential for renewal. The collaboration showcases the power of partnership in fostering inclusive growth and both organisations’ commitment to the development of Cambodian youth, according to the release.
