Prime Minister Hun Sen officially opened the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2022 at the Sokha Beach Resort, as delegates from across Southeast Asia descended on Sihanoukville last Wednesday.
The hosting of the most important regional event since the easing of Covid-19 restrictions comes with Cambodia having taken over as Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations this year.
The ATF was opened with a glitzy ceremony attended by Hun Sen, Minister of Tourism Thong Khon, the tourism delegations from ASEAN and other distinguished guests, as well as members of the national and international media.
Those in attendance listened to the welcome speeches from Prime Minister Hun Sen and Tourism Minister Khon, and enjoyed a three-course meal as well as a spectacular firework display and show featuring music and Apsara dancing.
“On behalf of the Cambodian people and [government], I would like to express my gratitude to excellencies, ministers and leaders of ASEAN member states, leaders of the World Tourism Organization, ASEAN Tourism Association and national and international tourism companies for supporting Cambodia in organising the 40th ASEAN Tourism Forum 2022.
“As the Chair of ASEAN for the third time in 2022, Cambodia will promote, accelerate and harmonise efforts to revitalise all sectors to build a sustainable, inclusive and resilient ASEAN community after the COVID-19 crisis in line with the theme ‘ASEAN ACT – Addressing Challenges Together’,” Hun Sen said at the ATF 2022 opening ceremony.
The following morning, the prime minister cut the ribbon to open the TRAVEX tourism expo. With 187 sellers, 40 buyers and 20 media companies involved, 322 guests from 27 countries were expected to attend. In line with ASEAN’s green agenda, a Tree Planting Programme was part of the event agenda. PHOTOS BY HENG CHIVOAN
