ASEAN has expressed its sorrow over the devastating earthquake in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains in a statement on September 13. The bloc confirmed its willingness to aid in relief operations.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage in Morocco. [We] extend heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the government and people of Morocco, particularly the families of the victims,” the statement read.
ASEAN affirmed its solidarity with the country during this difficult period, stating that it “stands ready to extend its assistance to the relief efforts”.
Yang Peou, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, spoke to The Post on September 14, noting that the statement reiterates ASEAN’s commitment to global humanitarian responsibilities.
“States and communities, whether regional or international, are obliged to assist each other in these matters. This is a fundamental principle,” he said.
Peou added that the statement serves to emphasise ASEAN’s proactive stance, extending beyond diplomatic matters to emergency assistance.
“Natural disasters are becoming increasingly frequent and severe due to human actions like global pollution and warming. Therefore, all nations must support each other,” he said.
International news agencies have reported that the death toll from the 6.8-magnitude earthquake, which occurred on September 8, had surpassed 2,900.
