The Ministry of Interior has reviewed the request for political rehabilitation made by Pol Ham, former deputy president of the Supreme Court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), and former senior party member Phan Chansak on May 17.
Chhim Kan, deputy director of the ministry’s general department of administration, told The Post on May 19 that he was in the process of preparing a letter to the King requesting the political rehabilitation for Ham and Chansak.
“Neither Ham nor Chansak had violated the court's ban. So they can get their political rights back," Kan said.
Kan did not specify when the letter would be sent to the King.
Chansak said that after being banned by the Supreme Court from politics for more than three years, he had appropriately complied with their verdict.
He said that during the ban he never participated in any political activities and was just living and working as a citizen.
"I did not participate in any activities prohibited by articles 8 or 9. I was living a normal quiet life," Chansak said.
Chansak said when he is granted political rehabilitation, he will join the newly established Cambodia Reform Party founded by former CNRP lawmaker Ou Chanrath.
Ham has yet to comment publicly on his political future.
