PM to China-ASEAN: Join hands in quashing Covid

Prime Minister Hun Sen on September 10 called on China and the 10 ASEAN countries to join hands in stamping out Covid-19 and ensuring the sustainability of socio-economic activities and the livelihoods of the people.

The prime minister delivered a speech that was broadcast at the opening ceremony of the 18th China-ASEAN Expo, held from September 10-13 under the theme "Sharing Opportunities Created by the New Land-Sea Corridor, Building the China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future".

He said the event “certainly bears testimony to the great success of China-ASEAN dialogue relations, which have brought about development in all fields, and prosperity” to the 11 countries and their peoples.

“Going forward, I am of the view that China and ASEAN must continue to work together in the fight against Covid-19, and overcome the pandemic to better support socio-economic activities and people's livelihoods.

“The battle against this global pandemic requires solidarity, trust, joint planning as well as action in a prudent manner, via a mechanism that underpins multilateralism and ensures respect for international law and the sovereignty of each country,” Hun Sen said.

The prime minister urged the countries to continue to promote cooperation in all sectors, especially finance and trade, further widen market access and facilitate free trade and investment flows, as a means to accelerate socio-economic recovery in the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis.

“[This] would enable Cambodia and other countries in the region to promote exports of commodities with potential and raise more financial resources,” Hun Sen said.

He thanked China for providing Cambodia with coronavirus vaccines and lauded the East Asian country’s contributions to the global fight against the pandemic, stressing that the Kingdom has made leaps and bounds in the Covid-19 battle, especially in its mass vaccination campaigns.

“Cambodia is on course to achieve its goals in the very near future of developing national herd immunity and reopening socio-economic activities in incremental steps.

“Given this opportunity, the Royal Government of Cambodia has proactively made unremitting efforts to improve the business and investment environment, as well as to enhance competitiveness through the introduction and implementation of a steady stream of sweeping reform measures,” the prime minister said.
