An unlicensed midwife was arrested by police in Battambang province’s Kamrieng district on Saturday, after a man accused her of causing his wife’s death.
Kamrieng district deputy police officer Nget Vanna said yesterday that the husband had called the midwife, Korng Serey, to assist in delivery.
His wife Kuth Khum, 28, died after excessive bleeding.
The husband filed charges with police against the midwife and is demanding 3 million riels (US$750) in compensation.
“The suspect, Korng Serey, 50, has never learned or got midwife training at the Ministry of Health or a health centre. She learned from her older sister,” Nget Vanna said. “She was charged with unintentional murder.”
Deputy director of the provincial health department Kuy Sok confirmed the suspect was not licensed. “We appeal to people to come to the hospital or health centre. Don’t deliver the baby at home or with unprofessional midwives,” he said.
