Specialists from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology under the APSARA National Authority (ANA) are repairing the sandstone window frames at the southwest corner of the second gallery of the Angkor Wat Temple, which were in danger of collapsing.
Soy Sophearith, an archaeologist and conservation agent at Angkor Wat, said that due to the ages of the building and its exposure to the sun, rain, water seepage and moss, the windows and parts of the structure of the second gallery are badly damaged.
He added that experts would need a month and a half to repair the pillars and beams before returning them to their regular location. Although they would be repaired, wooden bars would be added to protect them. The bars will also prevent tourists from climbing through the windows – a potential risk to them – and the structure.
