Banteay Meanchey reopens Cambodian-Thai border

Banteay Meanchey provincial governor Om Reatrey has reopened the border to receive Cambodian migrant workers returning from Thailand who were left stranded after the government imposed a lockdown to contain Covid-19.

"The two-week lockdown aimed at stemming the coronavirus Delta variant is to be lifted at 11:59pm on August 12 and the border will be reopened at the onset of July 13," Reatrey said in his letter to the governor of Thailand's Sa Kaeo province.

Reatrey and his Thai counterpart also met to discuss the issue on August 13. Both sides agreed to cooperate in addressing any problems that might arise following the reopening, especially in managing the flow of migrant workers to prevent Delta spreading into communities.

Reatrey suggested that the Thai side facilitate their return to avoid a sudden influx.

"Please inform us immediately of any problems that need addressing so that we can be prepared to receive them," Reatrey said.
