AS rumours surfaced about provincial authorities in Kampong Cham selling off a primary school and the land surrounding it, the Cambodian Independent Teachers Association (CITA) asked yesterday that Education Minister Im Sithy launch an investigation.
CITA president Rong Chhun sent a letter to Im Sithy alleging the department of educat-ion and provincial authorities had worked together to sell the Veal Vong primary school, in Kampong Cham town, to an unknown buyer.
The letter also states that the new school, which will be smaller, will be far from many of the students’ homes, making it difficult for them to attend.
“I strongly disagree with the school exchange, which appears to be under the picture of development, but in fact is a form of corruption,” Rong Chhun said.
Deputy director of educat-ion for Kampong Cham province Thoung Kim Chean denied the CITA’s allegations.
“About three years ago, I heard that there was a school exchange, but it was stopped,” Thoung Kim Chean told the Post yesterday.
