A robber accused of the beating of three young children – leaving one dead at the scene and another to succumb to her injuries days later – was found guilty of robbery and intentional murder, and sentenced to 18 years in jail by Pursat

Provincial Court yesterday.

Bun Yet, 28, was also ordered to pay 20 million riel (about $5,000) in compensation to the family, according to provincial prosecutor Pang Chansoyutheara.

“The family of the victims attended the hearing and said the suspect did the robbery and killing,” he told the Post. “The suspect also confessed at the hearing before the judges.”

In January, Yet, a resident of Kandal’s Lvea Em district, beat three children while stealing a motorbike from their Pursat home while the parents were out. The youngest, a six-year-old boy, died at the scene, while his eight- and 10-year-old

sisters were left unconscious.

Brought to a Phnom Penh children’s hospital, both struggled for life for days, with the older of the two eventually passing away as well.

The parents of the victim couldn’t be reached for comment, but Chansoyutheara said they seemed to be satisfied with verdict and sentence.
