Chinese and Cambodian officials have pledged to strengthen ties in digital technology, including training for officials from the Ministry of Interior.

The commitment was made during a meeting between Por Pheak, secretary of state at the ministry, and Li Xiang Ming, police liaison adviser at the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh, on September 12.

Li thanked his counterpart for the cooperation and said he hopes the collaboration will continue to be strong, according to a ministry press statement.

Pheak informed Li that the first phase of the new government’s Pentagonal Strategy, which was recently released, emphasises computerisation. He noted that officials at the newly established General Department of Digital Technology and Education will require both technical training and equipment.

He requested further assistance from the Chinese side in this field.

“Li underscored the importance of work related to digital technology and highlighted the role of the department. He said that relevant working groups will seek strong cooperation in this area and provide as much training as possible,” said the statement.

Pheak also noted to Li that liaisons between the ministry and China’s Public Security Bureau (PSB) had significantly improved during the tenure of former Interior Minister Sar Kheng.

Yang Peou, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, saw several benefits in the effort between the two countries.

First, he said, it will enhance the capabilities of police officials and improve information technology management at state institutions, particularly at the interior ministry.

“Secondly, it will help prevent online scams. I generally support this partnership as it is beneficial for both sides,” he added.
