Forest fire training underway for rangers

The training was held from May 18-19 in Siem Reap province, with the aim of reducing the spread of wildfires and smog in the Mekong Basin. ENVIRONMENT MINISTRY

The Ministry of Environment’s General Department of Nature Protection, with the support of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), provided training to rangers on the surveillance and prevention of wildfires and cross border smog in the Kingdom’s protected areas.

The training was held from May 18-19 in Siem Reap province, with the aim of reducing the spread of wildfires and smog in the Mekong Basin. The workshop also instructed rangers on how best to respond to fires in protected areas, said the ministry.

The training, attended by a total of 70 people, was led by ministry secretary of state Srun Darith, with forest rangers and officials from Siem Reap, Battambang, Stung Treng, and Preah Vihear province in attendance.

The guest speakers and instructors included trainers form the Royal University of Agriculture’s agriculture and environment research centre, as well partner organisations such as WCS, Wildlife Alliance, and Wild Earth Allies.
