Ilegal use of firearms

Two military officers and one motodop were jailed on Sunday after allegedly brandishing a gun and threatening to murder a woman in the capital’s Sen Sok district. Chim Vuth, Sen Sok district military police officer, said yesterday that Kong Sophannara, 23, and Chao Van Nhek, 24, both members of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces paratrooper unit, were arrested at about 5:30pm on Sunday in Teuk Thla commune. A motodop driver, Reth Ratana, 23, was also arrested. Chim Vuth said the arrests were made based on the complaint of a local vendor, who claimed the suspects threatened to kill her. He said that according to her complaint one of the suspects pointed a pistol at her during an argument about her son speeding on his motorbike. “They [suspects] are now being detained at the Phnom Penh municipal military police office for further investigation and questioning before being sent to court,” Chim Vuth said. Police confiscated a pistol, ammunition and a motorbike from the suspects.
