Thuorn Sinan, president of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia chapter, has urged the Ministry of Environment to back a meditation centre project in Stung Popok (River of Clouds), in Koh Kong province’s Sre Ambel district.

The centre aims to promote ecotourism, religious tourism and nature conservation in the area.

Sinan presented the proposal during a February 12 meeting with minister Eang Sophalleth. He confirmed the ministry is currently reviewing the proposal, submitted the following day.

“Ministry approval has been secured, and we’re ready to launch immediately. Our plan targets an 18ha site in Stung Popok, and we eagerly await the go-ahead to begin,” he said.

Sinan outlined his personal leadership role in the project, which will involve collaborating with students of meditation and Buddhism.

He noted the centre’s exclusive focus on mindfulness, stressing its intended purpose of influencing positive societal change.

Sophalleth said the project would empower communities by encouraging entrepreneurship, leading to prosperity and beautification across various sectors such as ecotourism, accommodations, transportation and the sale of local products to visitors.

“This project aligns with the ministry’s Circular Strategy on Environment 2023-28, specifically its principles for protected area management and development, by prioritising community livelihood improvement and local benefit,” he said.

Sophalleth also urged fostering entrepreneurial spirit within local communities, highlighting how diverse innovations arising from this initiative would set communities apart.

“By prioritising cleanliness, greenery and sustainability, the ministry seeks to guarantee both national cleanliness and environmental health,” he said.

He noted the importance of behavioural change, stating that a cultural shift towards sanitation is essential for lasting progress.

He also commended the community’s commitment, noting their practice of maintaining fair prices for produce sold to tourists, which demonstrates a commendable prioritisation of consumer satisfaction.
