An illegal logger was shot dead by Thai security forces on Sunday and two others have been reported as missing, police have said.

Pich Vanna, chief of the Cambodia-Thailand border relations office, said a preliminary intelligence report showed that the deceased crossed into Thailand to log rosewood and was shot by border rangers.

“We have not identified the dead body, and the two missing people have still not returned,” he said. “We are working to communicate with our Thai counterparts but the process of our request for repatriation of the body is ongoing.”

Kim Seng, Choam Khsan district deputy governor and chief of the Anses border checkpoint, said he was waiting for confirmation from Thailand. “I do not have clear information, but our border officials are in contact with Thai counterparts,” he said.

Sixty-nine Cambodians were shot dead in Thailand last year, the Ministry of Interior says. In March, 12 illegal loggers were reported killed in a single incident.
