The mother of a four-year-old who died after alleged maltreatment in Siem Reap’s Khvav commune filed a suit against the local doctor yesterday, Jan. 08, 2013, asking prosecutors to file criminal charges.

“That doctor injected her four times a day for three days, but she still didn’t improve. I took her to hospital in my district and they advised me to send my daughter to Jayavaraman VII children’s hospital in Siem Reap city,” said Arng Mesa, whose daughter passed away December 26.

At the hospital, she said, doctors told her that her daughter had been misdiagnosed and given the wrong medication, which affected her liver and lungs.

Dr Oreun Meng denied the accusations, saying the child suffered from nothing more than a “normal fever” and said he treated her correctly. “When she brought her daughter to my house, her health condition was alright,” he said.

Prosecutor Ty Soveinthal said he was investigating the case.
