The new government led by Hun Manet has appointed Meas Sophorn, former spokesman for the Ministry of Information, as head of the Prime Minister's Spokesperson Unit to convey Manet's personal information, communicate with domestic and international media and issue statements.

Manet signed a directive establishing the unit on August 24, noting that it will serve directly under his Cabinet.

“All appointments and changes in the composition of the Prime Minister's Spokesperson Unit shall be made at the discretion of the prime minister, at the request of the chair of the unit. The unit may form working groups as necessary, also at the discretion of the prime minister,” said the directive, which took immediate effect.

It added that the unit will be tasked with coordinating the prime minister's personal communications and with sharing all information related to the premier.

The unit shall research and compile all information related to the Prime Minister, make clarifications, issue press releases and statements, and share any other relevant information, it said.

The unit’s operating budget will be drawn from the Prime Minister's Cabinet.

Sophorn could not be reached for comment on August 25.
