The Ministry of Information plans to send its technical officials to train in advanced information technologies in various countries in a bid to increase their understanding of digital trends.

Information and Broadcasting director-general Phos Sovann said on Thursday: “We keep talking about preparing for digital television infrastructure in the future, so now we need to act.

“The National Television of Kampuchea has raised these issues before. We have a shortage of human resources and capacity.

“Many skilled officials have retired and the capacities of the new generation of officials remain limited. Training for digital techniques and technologies in the Kingdom also remains limited,” he said.

He said that he knew the Ministry of Information would recruit many technical officials who had just passed the high school examination, and he hoped it would send the new recruits for further training to continue their education in the field.

Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith said during the celebration of the 109th anniversary of International Women’s Day which fell on March 8, that the information sectors in other countries had developed considerably.

He said some countries had a high level of knowledge which gave them the capacity to manage technical systems well. Therefore, Cambodia should send skilled officials to these countries to learn them from them.

“While meeting with the Japanese ambassador on Thursday, I urged him to provide opportunities for National Television of Kampuchea staff to learn from Sony and other major technology companies.

“I hope that these companies will help teach our officials and raise their digital knowledge,” he said.

Kanharith said his ministry had collaborated with many countries to exchange information and sending officials abroad to learn broadcast techniques should also be arranged.

The National Television of Kampuchea, he said, hopes to employ more advanced digital techniques next year in three departments – national radio, the National Television of Kampuchea and Agence Kampuchea Press (AKP).

“When new digital technology is installed, the National Television of Kampuchea’s work will be divided into these three channels. This work starts next year when we propose to launch the project,” he said.
