The National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD) has instructed Koh Kong provincial authorities to strengthen their cooperation with neighbouring countries to control the trafficking of drugs and chemicals across the borders.

The Kingdom’s anti-drug body, in collaboration with Koh Kong Provincial Hall, held a November 20 meeting to share the NACD’s anti-drug recommendations to the Provincial Drug Control Committee members.

“The meeting demonstrated the will and commitment of the 7th mandate government to eliminating the threat of drugs. Not only were NACD guidelines for the implementation of anti-drug work disseminated, but additional guidance and support was offered to the provincial authorities,” said an NACD press release.

It added that NACD deputy secretary-general Neak Yuthea specifically requested that the provincial anti-drug authorities – as well as all other relevant units – pay close attention to law enforcement measures. They should strengthen the control mechanisms of compound chemicals, as well as prevent the import, processing, production and use of drugs.

He also instructed them to strengthen international cooperation with neighbouring countries on cross-border trafficking of drugs and precursor chemicals, through the strengthening of Border Liaison Office (BLO) mechanisms.

Yuthea reminded them of the importance of providing education, treatment and rehabilitation to any drug users who were discovered in the community.

He tasked Samkhit Vien – deputy provincial governor and Chairman of the Secretariat of the Koh Kong Provincial Drug Control Committee – with leading the work and instructed him to prepare an implementation plan that would provide a practical response to the drug situation in his jurisdiction.

In a separate case, three Vietnamese suspects were arrested in connection with intercepted packages that they attempted to send from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City.

On November 17, the Anti-Drug Department of the National Police responded to a tip from a transport company representative and seized two large packages from a depot in the capital’s Veal Vong commune in Prampi Makara district.

“The officers discovered almost 1kg of ketamine and more than 60kg of unidentified liquid chemicals. According to standard procedure, the suspects and the evidence have been sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court,” said a November 20 report.
