New Briefs: ASEAN Rebuffs Burma

SINGAPORE (AP)-Burma's poor human rights record will keep it from gaining membership

soon in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, officials said May 19.

They said Burma had probed possibilities for joining the group in an approach to

the ASEAN secretariat in Jakarta last month. ASEAN officials fear the United States

and the EC, probably would break off their annual dialogues with ASEAN if Burma was

granted membership.
