New consumer protection law draws praise at Oz discussions

Minister of Commerce Pan Sorasak has received support from Australia in consumer protection, as he leads a delegation of the National Commission on Consumer Protection to Sydney for talks with their counterparts.

Sorasak is visiting at the invitation of Gina Cass Gottlieb, chairwoman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The minister said the visit is aimed at generating support for the enforcement of the recently passed law on consumer protection.

“The visit is an opportunity for us to learn from the experience of the ACCC and how they have benefited consumers, business owners and Australian border economies,” he said.

According to the ministry, Cass-Gottlieb hailed Cambodia for the passage of the law.

The Kingdom’s National Commission for Consumer Protection was established in October 2020 and is made up of 12 members from relevant ministries and institutions, chaired by the commerce minister.

The commission’s role is to strengthen cooperation between all national and international institutions to ensure that consumers benefit and enjoy protection under the law.

Phan Oun, head of the Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression directorate-general, told The Post that the visit would be of significant benefit to both nations.

“We are hoping to build our capacities by learning new knowledge from our Australian counterparts. We will also share our experiences and build a network with them. Our visit is scheduled to last three days,” he said.
