A May 25 fire that swept through a squatter community of wooden shacks along Sothearos

Boulevard in Chamkarmon district of Phnom Penh left 2700 residents homeless. The

cause of the fire remains under dispute. The British Embassy distributed $4340 in

material aid to the area's former residents, who have been relocated to National

Route 4 approximately 20 kilometers from Phnom Penh. The burnt-out area is to be

re-developed as a public park.
