Phnom Penh municipal governor Khuong Sreng has released 140 tonnes of milled rice to be distributed to people in need in the capital’s 14 districts.

He said Prime Minister Hun Sen gave the instruction on April 18.

"About 140 tonnes of rice ... will be transported to all 14 districts on April 19. District governors can then distribute it to people who are lacking food," he said, directing all district governors to regularly check on people who call for assistance.

The municipality has also set up a Telegram group to provide a means for people in need to contact the authority for food assistance during the lockdown.

The Executive Committee to Manage and Lead the implementation of the Lockdown in Phnom Penh announced that those facing food shortages can use the Telegram group Urgent Need for Necessary Food Aid for the purpose.

The committee also requested that residents clarify the number of families, family status, occupation, and address together with a contact number before receiving rice.
