Four alleged brokers found with eight women in a Phnom Penh guesthouse on Tuesday evening will be sent to the municipal court today to face charges of human trafficking, police said yesterday.

The one Chinese and three Cambodian brokers arrested in Por Sen Chey’s Anita Guesthouse had told the women that they would be married to husbands in China and were preparing to send them abroad when they were arrested, said Keo Thea, director of the Phnom Penh Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Office.

“The women had wanted to go abroad because of the promise of Chinese husbands, but actually they faced risks that they could be trafficked into forced labour,” Thea said.

The eight victims, including a 16-year-old minor, were questioned, educated about these risks and released, he said.

“I have explained to them the law that if foreigners want to marry Cambodians, they must earn $2,500 per month,” he said.
