Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Kuoch Chamroeun held a meeting to approve the draft of a map which will demarcate the marine fishery areas of Prek Kampong Smach in Prey Nop district. Clear demarcation will improve the sustainability of fisheries and preserve biodiversity.

The provincial administration said that Prek Kampong Smach is rich in marine resources such as mangroves, sea grass and coral. Prey Nop district is supplied by three important tributaries – Fresh Water creek, Prek Kampong Smach and Preakl Toal.

Provincial deputy governor Kong Vitanak described the areas as beautiful, with a complex ecological system. There are areas covered with mangrove forest and areas suitable for fishing, he said.

He added that Kampong Smach has 39 patches of mangrove forest, 23 of which were recently replanted, while 16 original forests remained. Some of the mangrove trees can grow up to 25m high, he said, adding that these large trees provide a favourable habitat for crabs.

To better manage fisheries there, the province has indicated four goals: improving sea fisheries and biodiversity; protecting rare and endangered species and their habitats; promoting the livelihoods of local communities; and strengthening governance in the area.

Chamroeun said at the meeting that protecting the mangrove forests is a must.

“We have to identify on where to plant more mangrove trees and then we will be able to agree on the best locations for designated fisheries, to ensure that biodiversity will be protected. This will lead to an increase in eco-tourism,” he said.

He also instructed local authorities in the communes and the district to raise public awareness of the importance of the mangroves. They should join hands to protect the forests because that will protect both the environment and their incomes, he added.
