Two military officers died on the scene while taking part in a military exercise in Stung Treng province's Thala Barivat district on January 14.

Royal Cambodian Army spokesman Major General Mao Phalla told The Post on January 15 that the two officers held the rank of first sergeants. They were killed by a round from a recoilless rifle.

“We are saddened by this incident. During the training, they managed to fire two rounds, but the last exploded in the barrel,” he said.

He said their bodies had since been handed over to their families for funeral.
