TWO dogs were killed by landmines over the weekend while allegedly spying for Thailand near Ta Krabey temple along the border near Oddar Meanchey province, Cambodian military sources said yesterday.

Yu Long, a Cambodian solider at the border, said the two canines had been sent to sniff out Cambodian military positions.

“It is not the first time. [Thai soldiers] cannot enter, so they use the dogs,” he said.

Yu Long added that the Thais had previously attached small cameras to dog collars to collect intelligence.

One such dog had been seized and killed last month during heavy fighting along the border near Ta Krabey and Ta Moan temples, he said. The clashes, which stretched over 11 days  and involved heavy artillery as well as small arms fire, left at least 18 dead on both sides.

Neak Vong, a military field commander stationed at Ta Moan temple, said yesterday that the situation along the border was normal.

Officials in Bangkok could not be reached for comment yesterday.
