The Thai embassy in Phnom Penh held the “Thailand Education and Job Fair 2024” to aid young Cambodian students in gaining information on work and scholarship opportunities at major companies and prestigious Thai universities.

The event took place at the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Centre (CJCC) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) on February 17.

At the fair, Thai ambassador Cherdkiat Atthakor highlighted that since 2023, the embassy has expanded its scope from solely organising job-seeking events to including education fairs as well.

He said that the embassy established the additional study fair programme because it recognised that employment and learning should complement each other.

“Initially, our focus was on work, but we later realised the equal importance of both work and study. So, we initiated more study fairs,” Atthakor said.

He emphasised that this year’s event featured more universities than last year, with over 20 participating firms, noting that on previous occasions, several large companies recruited through the fair.

He highlighted that these enterprises not only offer employment but also provide scholarship opportunities for students who study in Thailand and then return to work with them.

According to Atthakor, thousands of Cambodian students have pursued their studies in Thailand, mainly in business, engineering and the Thai language.

Pok Pan, secretary of state at the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, commented that the fair was held during a time of peace, national unity, political stability, security, social order and economic development in the country.

He added that offering scholarships to Cambodian students to study in Thailand aims to strengthen solidarity bonds and enhance the qualifications of students to meet the government’s human resource needs.

“The fair is tailored for young Cambodian and international students who are seeking information, experiences and scholarship opportunities to pursue higher education at Thailand’s leading universities and institutions. It is also an opportunity for students and job seekers to receive career counselling, particularly those wishing to apply for positions with Thai companies,” he stated.

Pan added that this year’s fair attracted students from diverse backgrounds, contributing to improved relations between the two countries in vocational training, which is in high demand in the Cambodian and ASEAN labour markets.
