At celebrations marking the 112th International Women’s Day on March 8, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Dith Tina said the government considers women to be the backbone of socio-economic development.
Tina said the government also supports a policy of gender mainstreaming for the agriculture sector to ensure peace, food security and accelerate national development, especially in the digital age, and to build the foundation for the 2050 vision.
“All forms of discrimination against women should disappear forever and all men should have faith that helping women is self-help because women’s progress is the progress of our society as a whole.
“All work needs to be done on an equal footing between men and women, and in the digital age we must help women and ease their burden and empower their leadership. The government has been focused on solving gender gaps in the digital sector, especially on increasing women’s participation in digital agricultural marketing, effective use of technology, education, knowledge and skills in science and technology,” he said.
For this year’s International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that the celebration aimed to highlight the value of women’s participation in maintaining peace and active involvement in accelerating development in all sectors.
He added that since the day of liberation from the Khmer Rouge, the government has always paid close attention to enhancing women’s lives, including creating the slogan “Women are the backbone of the national economy” because empowering women means improving their economic situation.
“The main goal and priority of the government and all relevant institutions is to strengthen the power of women in the economy by empowering women in all sectors,” he said.
Based on a previously established tradition, International Women’s Day was declared by the UN General Assembly in 1977 as the “UN Day on Women’s Rights and World Peace.”
The day is celebrated around the world to commemorate the history of the struggle for freedom and equality for women and to reflect on the achievements, challenges, commitments and positive measures aimed at further enhancing gender equality and empowering women and girls.
