Three of the five Romanian and two Moldovan women discovered working in a Phnom Penh
brothel in August 2000 returned to work in prostitution within weeks of arriving
home. The London-based Financial Times interviewed Romania's former officer in charge
of combating trafficking about the case, which attracted worldwide sympathy after
the women said they were duped into coming to Cambodia. Major Marin Banica said they
had fabricated the story to escape prosecution.
