Kep provincial police sent two suspects to the Kampot Provincial Court on Monday for questioning after they were held for allegedly hacking the Facebook account of provincial police chief Ben Dara to cheat people.

The incident is said to have happened on December 18 in Damnak Changaur Village, in Prey Thom commune, in Kep town.

Dara told The Post on Monday that police sent the two suspects aged 28 and 29 to the Kampot Provincial Court for hacking Facebook accounts belonging to him and other two persons.

After the suspects gained control of the accounts, they sent messages to many people to borrow money, which was sent to them on Wing, a money transfer app.

“Of course, they hacked my Facebook account. But we arrested and sent them to court already,” he said, before declining to comment further, claiming he was busy.

Kampot provincial court spokesman Man Boreth said the court had received the case file and a prosecutor is questioning the suspects.

“The prosecutor has not charged them yet as they are still being questioned,” he said.

A Kep provincial police report said the suspects used the Facebook accounts to cheat people of $9,500 and four million riel before fleeing the province.

After an investigation, Kep police station crime office chief, Keut Savuth, got wind that the suspects were hiding in Battambang province. Kep and Battambang provincial police worked together to hunt them down.

One of the suspects lives in Banan district’s Chheuteal commune, and the other in Chamkar Samrong district, Battambang province. One of them is a car seller in Battambang.

“After arresting and sending them to Kampot Provincial Court, Kep and Battambang provincial police are still on the lookout for their accomplices,” the report read. However, the number of victims was not mentioned in the report.

The National Police called on the public to assist by providing tip-offs in a timely manner so that it could crack down on crimes.
