The captivating land of Cambodia, rich in temples and cultural treasures, has caught the eye of US ambassador W Patrick Murphy. In particular, he sees Angkor as a vibrant hub, full of potential for organising sports and other events to boost the economy and tourism in the region.

Murphy voiced his appreciation after participating in the 10km race during the 8th Khmer Empire International Marathon 2023 in Angkor on August 6.

The annual race saw an impressive 2,511 participants, including over 500 international runners from 45 different nations.

More than just a sporting venue, Murphy emphasised the cultural importance of Cambodia. He particularly encourages Americans to discover the cultural heritage, acknowledging that the US has played a role in preserving the Kingdom’s historical treasures.

“Cambodia has amazing world heritage and I congratulate Cambodia on the 15th anniversary of the UNESCO listing for Preah Vihear temple,” said the ambassador.

“We will soon celebrate here in the Angkor complex. With US assistance, we are helping to renovate a number of cultural sites including the Phnom Bakheng restoration. We also are returning artefacts that have been looted from Cambodia,” he added.

Expressing his love for the events that Cambodia organises, he spoke warmly of his experiences running in the country.

“I try to run every morning to have a good work-life balance and get good exercise and enjoy everything that the Kingdom has to offer,” he said.

“So when these races are offered, I really enjoy joining them like today in Siem Reap. These are great events. We had from the US Embassy in Phnom Penh about 25 runners, both Americans and Cambodians, and it’s really a nice opportunity to enjoy cultural heritage, contribute to the economy here in Siem Reap with hotels and restaurants and just have a good time together as a team,” he added.

The ambassador was pleased to contribute to a greater cause as well.

“It’s good for our health, and this particular race is raising money for hospitals, so we’re happy to be able to contribute to a good cause here in Cambodia. We encourage everyone to enjoy this especially now because Cambodia is recovering from the pandemic and needs good visitors, especially good American visitors,” he said.

“I encourage my fellow compatriots to come, and while you’re here, enjoy a good run or a bicycle ride through the temples, which is a great way to appreciate this cultural heritage,” he added.
