A senior Ministry of Health official on February 27 warned that the new daily transmission cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant have shown no signs of dropping and remain a concern.

Ministry spokeswoman Or Vandine said the total number of Omicron cases had risen to 7,382 with the virus still spreading within communities.

“This is a number that we are concerned about. And if we all do not continue to implement preventive health measures, the more than 7,000 cases in the community will continue to rise steadily. The number of transmissions may rise from four to five digits in the near future,” she said.

Vandine said the main goal is to work together to curb the spread of the virus and slow it down because it is not possible to completely eradicate Omicron now with the highly-contagious virus circulating all over the country.

“We must be united in slowing down Omicron and minimising transmission cases. And more importantly, we ask that people continue to practise the three dos and three don’ts and everyone needs to get vaccinated,” she urged.

Vandine renewed her calls for people to forego large gatherings because they are high-risk places for spreading the virus.

“I believe that our people will understand and take part in the implementation of these measures to minimise the risk of a rapid increase in transmission,” she said.

According to the ministry, Covid-19 vaccinations in Cambodia have reached 90.93 per cent of the estimated total population of 16 million.

The country has vaccinated more than 110,000 out of 610,730 children aged 3 to 4, or 18.68 per cent, since the nationwide campaign for this age group began on February 23; 113.86 per cent of over 304,000 children aged 5; 106.73 per cent of more than 1.8 million children aged 6-11; 99.86 per cent of over 1.8 million adolescents aged 12-17; and 102.38 per cent of the adult population of around 10 million.

Nearly seven million people have received a third dose and nearly 100,000 have received their fourth.
