World Bank’s GEIP reach 800K students

Through its General Education Improvement Project (GEIP), the World Bank has implemented 1,700 general education improvements from kindergarten to secondary school, benefiting about 800,000 students.

During a May 2 six-monthly evaluation meeting of the project, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport Hang Chuon Naron thanked the World Bank for its support of the ministry, through the GEIP programme.

He said that the implementation of this project has made a significant contribution to supporting educational reforms, through a focus on school-level reforms.

Beng Simet, senior specialist with the World Bank, added that the evaluation noted that the efforts of leaders and project officers at all levels had led to significant progress.

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport is implementing the GEIP programme for a period of five years, from 2022 to 2026. The project is supported by funding from the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education.

The project aligns with the Cambodian government’s commitment to building human capital, as set out in the Rectangular Strategy Phase 4, as well as to achieve Cambodia’s developmental goals for 2030 and 2050.

It also responds to key reforms such as public financial management, decentralization and de-concentration programmes, and public administration. The project was also the basis for achieving two of the two education policies laid out in the Education Strategic Plan 2019-2023.
