June 3: A woman, Sareoun, 20, died after being hit on the head with a garden hoe by Sam Sen, 33, when he was unable to rape her because she struggled too much. The incident occurred at 2:10pm in Sa Em village, Sangker commune, Chhep district, Preah Vihear province. District police chief, Khiev Lum Ang said the rapist was very angry with the victim when his plan to rape her failed so he took the hoe and hit her three times which caused her to die immediately close to her farm hut.

June 2: A man who committed patricide and escaped for two months was arrested by police at 9am in Chrap village, Kbal Romeas commune, Se San district, Stung Treng province. Police identified the accused as Rin Ren, 22 and his father as Ying Rin, 55. The accused has a history of violent arguments with his father, but on April 8, 2008, at 11pm he killed his father by hitting him repeatedly on the head. Before the killing, he and his father had been drinking and his father had told him he was planning to sell the farm the next day. Enraged, Rin Ren battered his father to death with the handle of a garden hoe.

June 7: A man was arrested by Pailin anti-human trafficking police in Suon Ampov village after a weeklong manhunt prompted by a complaint from the victim’s father. Police arrested Khin Vet, 21, after the father of a 15-year-old girl reported her missing and said he suspected she has been trafficked to Thailand on May 31. Vet told police he took the victim to Lem where he stayed for six days in a house and had sex with the victim repeatedly. After having sex with her he handed her over to a man identified as Ny who is suspected to be a human trafficker.

June 8: Twenty-eight dogs from one village died the same night after being poisoned by a group of robbers. The incident occurred about 2am in Monorom village, Ang Snuol district, Kandal province. Police officials said that they suspected the thieves were either trying to dope the dogs and steal them – but this had gone wrong – or that they were trying to steal from the villagers and this would be easier if they poisoned the dogs. The village is said to be unnerved by the incident.

June 9: A gold vendor at Kampong Trach market was shot once in the chest with a K-54 pistol during a robbery. The incident happened in Kampong Trach 1 village, Kampong Trach Khangkert commune, Kampong Trach district, Kampot province at 4:30pm when the victim was driving a motorbike to his house. District police chief Khuon Sovan identified the victim as Cheng Sophath, 47, and said the thief took about 2.25 kilograms of gold and 60 million riels. The victim is in hospital in Vietnam.

June 9: Sum Pisith, 22, persuaded Meng Sony, 21, to accompany him to his rental house and then attempted to kill him, police said. The incident occurred at 5:30pm in rental house #4E4, Street 217, Sangkat Phsa Thmei 2, Khan Daun Penh, Phnom Penh. The victim was discovered by police face down in a pool of blood with slashed wrists, ankles and swelling on the front and back of his head. The suspect escaped before police arrived, even though witnesses called police to the house quickly because they thought the pair were behaving suspiciously when they arrived. The victim’s father said his son had borrowed Sum Pisith’s motor bike.

June 10: Meas Kunthy, 45, owner of Srov Tom restaurant in Phnom Penh, was arrested by police and military police of Khan Tuol Kork at 10am after he fired shots in an attempt to scare a security guard who worked at his restaurant. Police also arrested another man, Pho Rin, believed to be a soldier with the rank of major, and accused him of providing weapons to the accused and interfering with the police efforts to arrest him. According to eyewitnesses, before the shooting incident occurred the restaurant owner asked the security guard, 31-year-old Ho Vanda, if he’d picked up a bracelet made of 75 grams of platinum, which he suspected a guest had lost at dinner the night before. Kunthy asked to buy this bracelet and offered Vanda $350, which was declined. Kunthy then pistol whipped Vanda and shot into the air to intimidate him further. The incident occurred in front of Srov Tom restaurant on Kim Il Sung Blvd in Tuol Kork district.

June 10: A Taiwanese man accused of trying to smuggle 800 grams of heroin out of Cambodia was sentenced to 22 years in jail and fined 60 million riels. Lim Puching, 40, who worked as a factory manager in Khan Dangkor, Phnom Penh, was arrested at a checkpoint at Phnom Penh International Airport on October 14, 2007. Police seized 800 grams of heroin as evidence. Lim told the court that he was innocent. He said on October 14, 2007 he was going to Taiwan to report to his boss about the factory when another Taiwanese national, Sea Feuy, delivered a package to him, saying it was body lotion and asking him to take it with him.

       

June 8: The acting head of a Buddhist monastery was bound and killed by a group of robbers who escaped with his money and telephone. The incident occurred in Prek Kraboa pagoda, Prek Kraboa 3 village, Prek Kampeus commune, Khsach Kandal district, Kandal province at around midnight. Police identified the murdered monk as Pin Sim, 83, and said they suspected the killers were young and motivated only money.
