Huawei signalled its renewed interest to strengthen the company’s market share in the fast growing Cambodian mobile phone segment, following a back-to-back launch of its latest P30 series in Phnom Penh last week.

The Chinese manufacturer live-streamed the unveiling of the world’s first Leica Quad Camera of the P30 series global launch in Paris last Tuesday.

Later, on Friday, Huawei invited over 250 dealers, business partners, media and social media influencers to witness the launch of the same smartphone at a leading hotel in Phnom Penh.

“We are very optimistic of the Cambodian market this year, in all our portfolio in the [entry level], middle and high-end models, despite the fierce competition."

“Just two days after announcing the P30 series, we ran out of stock. We believe there is a market for good quality phones and Cambodians are happy to try new models,” Henry-Xiao, Country Director of Huawei in Cambodia told The Post on Monday.

Huawei, a leading global provider of information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices, has been operating in Cambodia since 1999.

Its fancy high-tech handsets come in different price ranges, catering for different categories of users in the local market.

Keeping abreast with its close competitors, like Samsung and Apple in the high-end segment and other brands like Vivo and Oppo, in the mid-range category, Huawei launched several models in the first quarter of this year.

In January, the company launched the A7 series and introduced the Mate X, a foldable 5G-enabled smartphone in March.

Cambodia’s mobile phone market is growing, largely buoyed by the rising disposable income, the young population and the need to communicate due to rapid rural-urban migration.

“The Cambodian market is growing fast compared to Laos or Myanmar and this is because of the fast growing economy. Even in the middle and high-end range we are enjoying good growth,” he said.

According to Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia, there are about 18.3 million mobile phone subscribers last year and the market is poised for a healthier growth, underpinned by a strong demand for smart handsets from tech-savvy young users.

The Kingdom’s youthful demography, where over 50 per cent of the population are under the age of 25, is another major pull factor for global smartphone producers, like Huawei.

According to the company’s press release issued on Friday, the P30 series are equipped with the innovative Huawei SuperSpectrum Sensor on 40MP main camera, an optical SuperZoom Lens, a new Huawei Time of Flight Camera to capture incredible photos and videos in every scenario.

The new SuperZoom Lens unlocks a superior level of zoom photography in a slim-line device design.

“It marks as another milestone of fundamental breakthrough after decades of digital camera technology development that we introduce another super camera phone in the smartphone industry."

“Our innovation always leads in this industry. It may be time to say bye bye to the normal smartphone and say hello to our supercamera phone, P30 series,” Xiao said at Friday’s event.

Shenzhen-based Huawei shipped out over 200 million smartphones last year, and now ranked third biggest smartphone seller after close rivals Samsung and Apple.
