Phnom Penh Crown Women’s football team head coach Mao Savin said that her Red Lions deserved the 2021 women’s league – due to the sacrifices the squad had made, their dedication to training and their competition winning gameplan.

In the final match of the Covid-delayed season – held last Sunday – the Crown women’s team put Battambang province to the sword, in a merciless 13-0 drubbing at RSN Stadium.

This meant Crown officially claimed their first league title, although it was a foregone conclusion. In the fourteen games of the season, Phnom Penh Crown lost just one match – to the women from Siem Reap – but claimed victory in their other 13 games.

Striker and team captain Ban Cheavey scored four goals during the win over Battambang Province to become the top scorer on the league table and win the golden boot. Cheavey scored 35 goals in the season. Her teammate Mak Sreyrath won goalkeeper of the year, while Phnom Penh Crown head coach Savin went home with coach of the year.

With the excellent result following a third place finish in the 2020 season, couch Savin spole to The Post and explaining how they found such winning ways.

“Winning the women’s league happened because all of the squad followed our games plans in both training and matches. We assessed our strengths and weaknesses and focused on them to complement each other o the field. We grew stronger from game to game,” she said.

“We have always been confident in this team, and have we have worked hard as a unit without thinking about ourselves as individuals, so we deserve to hold this title. We also focus on the negative aspects of our season and will improve them ahead of next year’s competition,” added the champion coach.

Former champions NagaWorld Kampong Speu defeated Boeung Ket women’s team 7-0 in their closing match of the season to finish second place, with a respectable 33 points from 11 wins and 3 losses. NagaWorld were also named the Fair Play team of the season while their striker Yon Yoeurn won best player of the year and Siem Reap took third place.
