World Cup 2022: Cambodia advance to round two

KEISUKE Honda’s Cambodia came from behind to beat Pakistan 2-1 in Qatar and book a place in the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers on Tuesday.

Cambodia had beaten Pakistan 2-0 at Phnom Penh’s Olympic Stadium in the first leg last Thursday and advanced 4-1 on aggregate.

Both the Angkor Warriors’ goals at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha came in the second half.

Hassan Bashir put Pakistan ahead with a penalty in the 18th minute to take the aggregate score to 2-1 and put the pressure back on Cambodia.

But Sath Rasib equalised for Cambodia in the 64th minute to restore their two-goal advantage.

With six minutes remaining, the Ministry of National Defence’s Reung Bunheing replaced Keo Sokpheng, and with 60 seconds left he made it 2-1 off a Sieng Chanthea pass to send Cambodia sailing through 4-1 overall.

The draw for the second round will be held on July 17 in Doha, with the first matches taking place in September.

The 40 teams will be drawn into eight groups of five, with the eight group winners and the four best runners-up advancing to the third round. The matches will double as part of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign.
